CHORAL COMPLINE

Harking back to the ancient traditions of plainsong within the great cathedrals, churches and abbeys of Great Britain, the Gentlemen of the Cathedral Choir at St Andrew’s Cathedral on King Street have re-ignited an institution that is reminiscent of the great monastic tradition of this country. The Gentlemen of the Cathedral Choir sing Compline at 6:00 every Friday within the sumptuous acoustic of the cathedral. Compline, traditionally the final monastic office of the daily liturgical cycle, is a service of contemplation and meditation reflecting the end of a busy, working day. The service is characterised both by the serene nature of the plainsong, and also by its brief duration; Compline that lasts longer than 17 minutes is considered long. Within the vast acoustic space of St Andrew’s Cathedral, the choir offers to the congregation a bygone tradition of tranquil plainsong, not heard with such regularity in Aberdeen for many years.
